Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Is stressing causing your hair loss?

How does it relate to Hair loss?

Been on edge lately? Stress is actually strongly linked to hair loss. Life-changing events, grief, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficinies and psychological stress can all lead to stress and in some people, this stress turns into hair loss. Hair loss caused from stress does have a bright side- it's usually only temporary! Most people who experience stress-related hair loss will find their hair grows back after a few months.

How does it cause Hair Loss?

There's a few ways which stress can trigger hair loss...

1. Stress Disrupts The Hair Growth Cycle: The average person loses around 100 strands of hair per day. This is part of our hair's natural cycle. It grows and falls out in cycles. However, stress can disrupt this cycle leading to what is known as Telogen Effluvium. Telogen Effluvium is basically supercharging this cycle and makes your hair strands enter that shedding phase sooner than they should. People will Telogen Effluvium may lose 300+ strands of hair per day.

2. Hormonal Imbalance: There's a sneaky little chemical in our bodies called 'Cortisol'. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone because it essentially regulates our stress. When we experience stress for extended periods of time, our Cortisol levels are elevated...this can lead to hair loss.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies: When we experience long-term, chronic stress, our bodies are spending so much time fighting off the stress that it depletes our body of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, that are needed for healthy hair growth. This can lead to weak hair that is prone to breakage and falling out.

4. Trichotillomania: Trich is a hair-pulling disorder which is usually brought on by stress or anxiety. People with trich compulsively pull their hair out to cope with anxiety. Trich can be managed through learning other coping mechanisms.
